Much of Taiwan during the Qing dynasty was deeply patriarchal; from birth, women were undervalued, with their only purpose being marriage. Chieh watches as her sister-in-law, obsessed with giving birth to a son, surrenders to superstition. Chieh is herself under pressure to marry; can she ever break free from society’s constraints?
